Consulting

Itasca Consulting Ltd. has been performing acoustic emission, ultrasonic monitoring and tomographic imaging at ONKALO underground rock characterisation facility. These geophysical techniques "passively" detect the creation or reactivation of fractures in rock, and "actively" examine the rock by sending signals though it, measuring velocity and amplitude changes to interpret changes in physical properties.
Acoustic emission and ultrasonic monitoring were performed in the volume around a test canister deposition hole. The monitoring of the induced damage confirmed the in-situ spalling strength of the Olkiluoto migmatitic gneiss. A novel P-wave tomographic imaging project has also been performed using custom frames to position sensors around the tunnel to analyse the excavation damaged zone field.
Results from the geophysics can be used to validate and develop numerical models for post-closure performance assessment.

Itasca Spain has developed a three-dimensional study of the stabilization and foundation of a pile for a cable bridge. This pile is located in a very sharp slope, with a wide level of colluvial deposits with low strength in the surface. The solution analyzed was based in the construction of an 8 m diameter concrete caisson, anchored to the ground. Different configurations of tensioned anchors were checked in order to select the optimized one. The analyses were made both in terms of factor of safety of the slope and the deformations and forces in the caisson and the anchors. Due to the dimensions of the caisson, it was modelled using volumetric elements, reproducing its real shape. FISH routines were developed to integrate stresses and obtained axial and shear forces and bending moments, all along the pile. These results were used to determine the steel reinforcement needed for the caisson.

  • PFC 5.0 upgrade
We are pleased to announce that considering the number of upgrade requests, we have reconsidered the no upgrade policy. From now on, users who are still at V4.0 or older can upgrade their licenses to V5.0.

  • InSite™ v3.7
The latest releases of the InSite family of software products are available. The software integrates data acquisition, processing, management, visualisation and interpretation for seismological studies, ranging in scale from acoustic emissions in the laboratory, through microseismics around mining and petroleum fields, up to regional-scale earthquakes. Significant improvements have been implemented including two new velocity models, improvements to interpretation methods, speed increases achieved through parallelisation, and enhancements to waveform visualisation. For further information please click here.

  • FLAC 8.0 release
Be informed that you can still pre-purchase FLAC 8.0 and benefit from a lower price. You will automatically entitle to download and use the FLAC 8.0 Beta software right now.
